ADVENTURE

Caleb’s Story

“I am an animal adventurer,” declares Caleb Lewis. “I enjoy adventures that include God’s creation and animals–any and all animals!” It is no wonder that Caleb has chosen to pursue wildlife and zoo careers and has graduated with a major in zoo biology and minors in marine biology and environmental science.

The youngest of 4 siblings, Caleb grew up camping with his family. “We were off the beaten trail,” Caleb recalls, “exploring the wilds! Since I was the youngest, I watched my siblings all go to summer camp at Wanake. They came back with a smile and stories about their week. I wanted to experience that. I was more than ready when I was finally old enough to attend.”

“I attended many water-based camps. I love the water – swimming, canoeing, fishing, water parks - everything water. I also enjoyed Secret Agent Camp, but Survival Camp was one of the highlights of camping. Camp for me has been a unique way to connect with other people, nature, and the Bible. It was cool to choose a specific theme for the week and meet a group of peers who shared the same passion. Singing our memory verses and making friends with strangers in only six days was amazing. I didn’t want the week to end. Today, I keep up with my camp friends on social media.”

“The counselors and activities at Wanake taught me how to interact with new people and build relationships. Today I interact with the new people I meet in my life and build relationships with them. The pool, woods, hiking trails, rock climbing areas, cookouts, petting zoo, and unique living spaces (like the Rock Lodge and the Survival Cabin) continued to feed my thirst for adventure and my love of nature. This has led to a life-long commitment to be a part of the environmental community and pursue a career in animal biology.

What I appreciate about Wanake is how much connection there is to creation and God’s nature all around. My hope is that Wanake will continue to attract people–children and adults–outside and keep people interested in exploring nature. I would love to see an explosion of people attend Wanake and experience what I have, ‘the beautiful, spiritual place among the hills.’”
