CONFIDENCE

Tonia* is a 13-year-old who loves basketball and whose life has had significant challenges.  Tonia’s grandmother has been a strong force in her life and, recently, Tonia began living with her grandmother who is her main caregiver.

“Tonia was a bit reserved when she first arrived at Wanake,” her counselor remembers, ”—a quiet young lady who kept to herself.  She was cautious about meeting the new people in her group and was new to exploring her relationship with God. Tonia was self-conscious, especially about her appearance, wearing makeup to express and manage her self-awareness.”

“The group accepted and respected Tonia,” her counselor reported.  “They accepted her makeup, her reservations, and her caution.  Despite her initial nerves and doubts, she did not hesitate to participate and try new things.  Whether we were swimming - where she was initially hesitant to take the swim test - or playing basketball—her favorite sport—she pushed herself to join in. Tonia started to feel more comfortable within the group, asking thoughtful questions about God and the Bible despite being new to exploring her relationship with God.  When we gave her a Bible to keep, she dug into it, asking thoughtful questions and showing a quiet wisdom that touched the entire group.  Her willingness to explore her faith, despite being at the beginning of her spiritual journey, was truly inspiring.”

“As the days at camp flew by Tonia found herself becoming more assured that she could conquer each task,” her counselor recounted with joy.  “I spent time encouraging her, especially during swimming, and it was rewarding to see her finally take the plunge, both literally and figuratively. She even ventured out to play with other campers. Tonia, seemed to grow more confident with each challenge.”

“By the end of the week, “her counselors remarked, “Tonia had formed connections not only with us, the counselors, but also with fellow campers. There were moments of hesitation, but with encouragement, Tonia was always willing to try new things from the activities to the diverse foods we tried. It was clear that despite her initial reservations, she was fully engaged and open to each experience. Tonia’s time at camp is a testament to the power of encouragement and the impact of creating a supportive environment at camp. Watching her grow, even in such a short period, was a privilege.”
